Why I Still Invest in the Market
Why I Still Invest in the Stock Market as an Alternative Investor
Hi Friends,
If you’ve been following along, you know I’m a strong believer in alternative investments. Real estate, private equity, and high-cash-value life insurance play a central role in my wealth-building strategy. But here’s the part that surprises people: I still invest in the stock market.
Even though I often discuss the limitations of traditional investing, I believe the stock market still has a place in a well-rounded portfolio—especially for high-income earners who are building wealth strategically. The key is understanding how to use it correctly.
The Strengths of the Stock Market in a Diversified Portfolio
While public markets come with volatility and tax considerations, they also offer advantages that are difficult to replicate in alternative investments.
Liquidity: Stocks and ETFs are highly liquid, allowing you to access capital quickly when needed.
Ease of access: Brokerage platforms and retirement accounts make investing simple and efficient.
Low entry barriers: You don’t need significant capital to begin investing in index funds or ETFs.
Broad market exposure: A single index fund can provide exposure to hundreds of companies across multiple industries.
Compounding growth: Reinvested dividends and consistent contributions can create powerful long-term compounding returns.
How I Use the Stock Market Alongside Alternative Investments
I don’t treat the stock market as my primary growth engine. Instead, I use it to complement my alternative investment strategy.
Liquidity buffer: I maintain a portion of my portfolio in publicly traded assets to provide flexibility. If an opportunity or unexpected expense arises, I can access funds without disrupting long-term investments like real estate or private equity.
Deferred compensation: Some of my stock exposure comes through a deferred compensation plan, allowing for tax deferral while maintaining diversification.
Diversification: Even with a heavy allocation to alternatives, public markets help spread risk across sectors and geographies.
For me, wealth building isn’t about choosing traditional versus alternative investments—it’s about creating balance.
Where the Stock Market Falls Short
Despite its strengths, the stock market has clear limitations—especially for high-income earners focused on tax optimization and asset control.
Volatility: Markets can react sharply to economic data, geopolitical events, and news cycles.
Tax drag: Capital gains taxes and dividend taxes can reduce after-tax returns without careful planning.
Limited control: Unlike private investments or direct real estate ownership, investors have minimal influence over outcomes.
This is why I lean on alternative investments for long-term wealth creation, while using the market strategically to fill important gaps.
How to Combine Traditional and Alternative Investments
If you’re focused on alternative investing, you don’t need to abandon the stock market entirely. Instead, consider how traditional investments can support your broader strategy.
Use public markets for liquidity and tactical diversification.
Focus on tax-efficient vehicles like index funds and ETFs when appropriate.
Align your allocation with your goals, risk tolerance, and time horizon.
If you’re primarily invested in the market, exploring alternative investments like real estate or private equity may help offset volatility and improve tax efficiency.
The real opportunity comes from combining both approaches to create a resilient, diversified portfolio.
Why Traditional Financial Planning Fails High-Income Earners
The traditional financial planning industry was designed for the masses—not for high-income earners looking to build generational wealth.
Most advice centers around saving aggressively, maxing out retirement accounts, and hoping long-term market returns will be enough. But high earners often want more than retirement security. They want optimized cash flow, asset protection, tax efficiency, and access to exclusive investment opportunities.
Traditional planning prioritizes accumulation over optimization. It often overlooks strategies that help you leverage capital, minimize taxes, and protect assets in a meaningful way.
What high-income earners need is a strategy built around their unique financial position—not a one-size-fits-all model.
